This four-game slump carries severe franchise implications beyond Sunday's box score. Front-office executives constructed this roster around high-priced, veteran stars on long-term contracts. Longtime fans remember the historic September collapse of 1964, a ghost that resurfaces whenever Philadelphia drops consecutive games in the final week. Players understand what is at stake. As one senior position player remarked inside a quiet clubhouse after the loss: "You'd much rather be in the postseason than not, right? We have nine innings to decide who we are."
