To evaluate how popular luggage actually holds up, we packed five top-rated viral travel backpacks to realistic weekend capacities and dropped them into Spirit's official terminal sizers.
The Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6 arrived as the internet favorite. When unexpanded, its exterior specifications measure 17 x 13 x 8 inches. Packed with two pairs of denim, four shirts, toiletries, and a 14-inch laptop, the Daylite dropped into the sizer without resistance. It cleared all four metal corners cleanly. When expanded to its 32-liter configuration, however, the depth ballooned to 9.5 inches, catching aggressively on the outer rim. Leaving it unexpanded is non-negotiable.
The Cotopaxi Allpa 28L presented an unexpected hurdle. While nominally listed at 19 x 12 x 9 inches, travelers frequently claim its soft shell allows it to squeeze by. We packed it to 75% volume. The bag slid down into the sizer, but the semi-rigid TPU-coated exterior bowed outward against the 8-inch width limit. A relaxed gate agent might let it slide; an agent conducting strict boarding gate checks will flag the protruding top handle.
The Amazon Basics Underseat Travel Backpack (nominally 13.5 x 9 x 17 inches) functioned as the benchmark budget option. Built squarely for ultra-low-cost carrier parameters, it slid into the metal box with half an inch to spare on every side. Conversely, the Peak Design Travel Backpack 30L failed our test. Its rigid molded structure and padded backplate simply cannot compress beneath 9 inches of depth, instantly disqualifying it from Spirit's free tier regardless of how lightly it is packed.
