The 2017 festival also carried rich symbolic weight within Roc Nation. Jay-Z had signed Cole in 2009 as the flagship artist for his newly minted entertainment label. Sharing top billing with his mentor at Philadelphia’s premier urban festival proved Cole had successfully stepped out from under Jay-Z’s shadow to become an autonomous stadium-filling draw.
Witnessing the operational mechanics of Made in America directly shaped Cole’s own business ambitions. Working closely with festival organizers and observing how Jay-Z leveraged city infrastructure in Philadelphia laid the groundwork for his next move. Just two years later, in April 2019, Cole and his Dreamville management team launched their own flagship gathering: Dreamville Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Cole took the structural lessons learned from the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, curated multi-genre lineups, community engagement, and artist-centric production schedules, and applied them to his own brand. The blueprint he perfected during his 2017 headline set became the operational template for Dreamville’s independent live events.
